The British and the United States governments have warned their citizens of terrorist groups’ threat to carry out bomb attacks in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, during the Yuletide.

In its latest foreign travel advice to British nationals, made available to SUNDAY PUNCH, the country’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office stated that it would raise the terrorism threat alert in Nigeria during the festive periods.

Around 117,000 British citizens visit Nigeria each year, according to the FCO.

BREAKING.......235 Killed In Suspected Islamic State Bomb And Gun Attack On Egypt Mosque

At least 235 people have been killed and dozens more injured after a suspected Islamic State bomb and gun attack on a mosque in Egypt.

The country's government has declared three days of mourning following the assault on al-Rawdah mosque, which has wounded around 130 people, according to state media.

The mosque is in Bir al-Abed in the volatile northern Sinai Peninsula, around 25 miles from the provincial capital of el-Arish, which has been regularly targeted by IS militants in recent years.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack - which came as worshippers took part in weekly Friday prayers - but state news agency MENA reports that it "appeared" to have been carried out by IS.

BREAKING: President Robert Mugabe Resigns

Robert Mugabe resigned as president of Zimbabwe Tuesday, parliament speaker Jacob Mudenda announced, bringing the curtain down on a 37-year reign. Mugabe was swept from power as his autocratic rule crumbled within days of a military takeover.

 “I Robert Gabriel Mugabe in terms of section 96 of the constitution of Zimbabwe hereby formally tender my resignation… with immediate effect,” said speaker Mudenda, reading the letter. The bombshell news was delivered to a special joint session of parliament. Lawmakers had convened to debate a motion to impeach Mugabe, who has dominated every aspect of Zimbabwean public life since independence in 1980. It was greeted on the streets of the capital Harare with car horns and wild cheering. It capped an unprecedented week in which the military seized control, tens of thousands of Zimbabwean citizens took to the streets to demand the president go and 93-year-old Mugabe wrestled to remain in power. Mugabe had ruled Zimbabwe almost unopposed since the country won independence from Britain. But his efforts to position his wife Grace as his successor triggered fury in the military that had underpinned his regime.

BREAKING: Many Feared Dead In Lagos Train Accident

Three persons are feared dead at Abbatoir area of Agege, Lagos when a train derailed this morning.

Lagos State police spokesman, Olarinde Famous-Cole, who confirmed the incident noted that the train rammed into a trailer, injuring many and leaving three of the victims feared dead.

“We just got the information. Our policemen and those attached to the railway command are in control of the situation,” Famous-Cole said.

BREAKING......Power Slips from Robert Mugabe As Military Steps In

Zimbabwe’s military appeared to be in control of the country Wednesday as generals denied staging a coup but used state television to vow to target “criminals” close to President Robert Mugabe.

Mugabe’s decades-long grip on power was dramatically weakened as military vehicles blocked roads outside the parliament in Harare and senior soldiers delivered a late-night television address to the nation.

“We wish to assure the nation that his excellency the president… and his family are safe and sound and their security is guaranteed,” Major General Sibusiso Moyo said, slowly reading out a statement.

“We are only targeting criminals around him who are committing crimes… As soon as we have accomplished our mission we expect that the situation will return to normalcy.”

Moyo said “this is not a military takeover of government”.

But the generals’ actions posed as a major challenge to the ageing Mugabe, 93, who has ruled Zimbabwe since independence from Britain in 1980.

Tensions between the veteran leader and the military, which has long helped prop up his authoritarian rule, have erupted in public in recent days.

The ruling ZANU-PF party on Tuesday accused army chief General Constantino Chiwenga of “treasonable conduct” after he criticised Mugabe for sacking vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Government silence

Mnangagwa’s dismissal left Mugabe’s wife Grace, 52, in prime position to succeed her husband as the next president — a succession strongly opposed by senior ranks in the military.

As the situation deteriorated overnight, prolonged gunfire was heard near Mugabe’s private residence.

Court Sentences Eight-Week-Old Baby To Death

A June 27 ruling from a European human rights court is forcing the English parents of a gravely ill baby to make their last, painful goodbyes to their son.

Chris Gard and Connie Yates have been in a legal battle over potentially life-saving treatment for their son, 10-month-old Charlie, since October of 2016. Charlie was born with a rare genetic condition. His parents believe an experimental treatment available in the United States will help him survive.

Their last legal battle was with the European Human Rights Court (EHRC), determining if they, as parents, have the right to continue to provide medical treatments for their son or if he should be allowed to die rather than continue in his condition, as his doctors have recommended.

The EHRC ruled Tuesday that the parents' application is "inadmissible." They believe Charlie is "being exposed to continued pain, suffering and distress," and any additional treatment would "continue to cause Charlie significant harm."

The full text of the EHRC ruling has not yet been made public, and the court has stated its decision is "final." The EHRC also removed the interim measure to keep Charlie's life support in place.

A spokesman for Great Ormond Street Hospital, where Charlie has been treated since October, has told the parents that there is "no rush" to remove Charlie's life support, and "any future treatment plans will involve careful planning and discussion." The hospital has said that though there is a deadline in place for Charlie, they wouldn't have to follow it exactly. The discussion and planning will take some days to work out.

Real Madrid and Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo has been accused by prosecutors in Spain of defrauding Spanish authorities of $16.4 million in tax between 2011 and 2014.

In a statement, the prosecutor's office said Ronaldo, a four-time Ballon d'Or winner, had used a "business structure" -- created in 2010 -- to hide the revenue generated by his image rights from the Spanish treasury, describing the breach as "voluntary" and "conscious."

The 32-year-old -- the world's highest-paid sports star according to Forbes -- has been charged with four crimes against the public treasury.

The statement said the Portugese became a Spanish tax resident in January 2010 and, in November 2011, opted to follow the Spanish tax regime that applies to foreigners working in the country.

Ghanaian Captain Maxwell Mahama Wrongfully lynched on suspicion of armed robber (VIDEO-Warning: Disturbing Content)

A Ghanaian Soldier attached to the 5th Infantry Battalion (5BN) at Burma Camp in Accra, Captain Maxwell Mahama has been lynched to death in Denkyira, Diaso where he was recently deployed to.

Eyewitness account has it that the captain was jogging in the morning when he got allegedly accosted by some people who mistook him for an armed robber.

As Captain Maxwell was not holding his ID and for the fact that he had a pistol on him, the youths and other residents delivered jungle justice on him.

However, someone else narrates the story thus:

"The people of Denkyira-Obuasi knew who Captain Mahama was. He had been stationed there for 3 weeks to fight against illegal mining; Galamsey.

"He is a regular jogger and knew the route well, I'm confident he didn't ask anyone for directions & the claim that he had stopped to ask some traders for directions and that is why they thought he was an armed robber is an after thought by the perpetrators.

"Also this community is full of Chinese people who also carry weapons. Captain Mahama carrying a pistol while jogging is no news especially in this community.

"His gruesome murder was orchestrated by the people (most likely led by the Assembly man who is said to be a small scale miner himself) to send a message to those who seek to combat illegal mining; the main source of livelihood for the people in the community.

"They knew him, they targeted him and they lynched him to teach the fighters of illegal mining Galamsey a bitter lesson".

Anointing Service Drama: Ambode Sacks Chaplain 24 Hours After Sunday Service …Priest, Family Thrown Out of Residence For ‘Disrespecting’ Gov’s Wife

There is anger at the Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Lagos State, after the Presiding Chaplain, Venerable Femi Taiwo, was sacked by the Governing Council allegedly on the order of the state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Taiwo got the sack on Monday, May 15, without any query or official reason stated in the sack letter.

He was said to have been ordered out of his official quarters where he lived with his wife and two children within 24 hours of receiving the letter.

Despite pleadings from church leaders and other reputable elders in the church, the government was said to have insisted that the cleric must leave the church.

Some church members reportedly contributed money to buy gas cooker, and other household items for the family as they vacated the vicarage.

Investigations by our correspondent showed that Taiwo had angered the Governor’s wife, Bolanle Ambode, who had visited the chapel on Sunday, May 14, when the church held an anointing service.

The church is under the Lagos State Ministry of Home Affairs, while the Office of the Lagos State First Lady supervises church.

Church members were said to have filed out to receive anointing oil during the May 14 service without any preference given to Bolanle, who waited endlessly with her entourage.

She was said to have later moved to be anointed and moments later, stormed out of the church, as some of the women leaders ran after her.

Bolanle, who was reported to be visibly angry, allegedly shunned entreaties from the women, which included the wife of the presiding chaplain.

The cleric got the sack the following day.

A popular Nollywood actor, Samuel Adesanya, popularly called Pastor Ajidara, is dead.

Mr. Ajidara, 62, died of kidney failure in the early hours of Sunday.

His wife, Atinuke Adesanya, who confirmed the death, said the actor died at Mercy Hospital, Onikolobo, Abeokuta, where he was receiving dialysis treatment.

Mr. Adesanya’s family had two days ago called for financial support of N12million from the public, following his doctor’s recommendation that he would need a kidney transplant to survive.

Ironically, Mr. Adesanya was owed about N4 million by the Ogun State government as a retiree of Ogun State Judiciary. He retired from the service on July 2, 2015‎ but was yet to get his retirement benefit till he died.

Mrs. Adesanya said that her husband’s illness started shortly after an auto crash in 2012. ‎

Until his death, Mr. Adesanya was the Governor of Ogun State Chapter of Theatre Art and Movie Producers Association of Nigeria, TAMPAN.

Sympathisers on Sunday morning besieged the Abeokuta home of Mr. Adesanya to commiserate with his family while arrangements were ongoing to deposit his corpse in the morgue, in preparation for final burial.

Nigerian Embassy In Washington Shut Down

Workers at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington have been on a sit-in, paralysing activities at the mission in the United States.

The workers said they have not been paid salaries for the past five months, forcing them to embark on the strike.

Although some departments of the embassy are said to still be functional, they threatened to report the embassy to the U.S. Labour Department.

There were no official functions at the embassy on Tuesday, as the workers only gathered at the lunch room in the basement.

The embassy in Washington and the consulate in New York are said to be currently cash strapped, with staff and local workers not being paid for months.

A source close to the Presidency said there has been a lot of mismanagement of resources in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, causing a lack of concern for staff welfare and difficulty in the missions being able to carry out their functions.

Oba of Lagos Palace on Fire [VIDEO]

A section of the palace of Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, in the Iga Iduganran area of Lagos Island has been gutted by fire.

It was learnt that the fire started from an air condition in an apartment inside the palace, destroying furniture and other household items in the room.

It was gathered that the incident started around 1:30 p.m. with smokes billowing to the sky, which attracted a crowd to the area.

The palace gate was, however, shut to the crowd as firefighters from the Lagos State Fire Service, Shari Iganmu and Ilupeju stations, battled to put it out.

Officials of Lagos state fire service are within the palace trying to put out the inferno.

The real cause of the fire outbreak is still unknown at the moment.

The incident is coming barely one week after the Oba publicly shunned the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

50 Feared Dead In Fresh A-Ibom/C-River Boundary Crisis

No fewer than 50 persons were feared killed, yesterday, following a raid on another Akwa Ibom State community, Akpa-Mfrukim, in Akan Obio, a fishing settlement in Uruan Local Government Area of the state by armed youths suspected to be from Odukpani Local Government Area in Cross River State.

An indigene of the area who pleaded anonymity confirmed the development to Vanguard, but said he was not sure of the casualty figure. 

He said: “Many people have fled their homes because of the invasion by the hoodlums, who (allegedly) came from Ikot Offiong, which is part of the age-long boundary feud between Oku-Iboku clan in neighbouring Itu Local Government Area of the state, with Ikot Offiong people in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State. 

Efforts to speak with the Transition Committee Chairman, Uruan council, Dr. Edwin Okon, on the incident was not successful as his telephone lines were off.

However, the Chairman was quoted to have said: “The protracted crises have forced the remaining indigenes to flee and seek refuge elsewhere.

 “Farming and fishing, which are the major sources of livelihood of my people, have been affected by the invasion of these communities by people from Odukpani.” 

The Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom State Police Command, Mr. Chukwu Ikechukwu, who could not confirm the incident at press time,  said: “I am not aware of the attack but, I will contact the Divisional Police Officer in the area for confirmation.”

Corpse being prepared for burial grabs brother’s hands

• There was panic today (Monday) at the mortuary of Plateau Specialist Hospital in Jos, when the corpse of a man being prepared for burial suddenly grabbed his living brother’s hand.

• The incident happened as the deceased, identified as Choji Zeng, was being dressed up by his brother, in preparation for burial.

• Family members who had participated in the washing of the corpse ran out in panic as they saw the dead Choji Zeng holding tight to his younger brother, Mr. Gyang Zeng.
• The pandemonium attracted mortuary attendants, who came in to separate the two brothers.
• 
  
• The two brothers had lived together at Ungwan Juma’a abattoir in Jos metropolis. Choji Zeng, 35 years old, died after a brief illness, relations said. He was said to have suffered from a liver disease.

Breaking...... Federal High Court Orders Immediate Release Of Biafran Leader, Nnamdi Kanu

The High Federal Court of Abuja has ordered the release of controversial director of Radio Biafra, Nammadi Kanu. He was arrested in October by the the state security service (DSS) on charges of criminal conspiracy and belonging to an unlawful organisation.

The DSS refused to release Kanu after the magistrates court in Abuja had granted him bail in October.

The DSS argued the conditions for the bail were not met and obtained permission from the High Court to detain Kanu for a further 90 days to investigate on alleged terrorism charges.However, Kanu's supporters and family members expressed concern as Kanu did not appear in court for the ruling. His wife, Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, told IBTimes UK: "He has been released unconditionally but he was not brought to court. What have they done with my husband? I will wait till he's been seen.

"The ruling came as thousands of Ipob members are holding a two-day demonstration in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial hub. Protesters have been asking for the immediate and unconditional release of Kanu as well as the independence of Biafran territories that used to be part of a separate state before being annexed to Nigeria during the British colonisation. Lagos Landlord Beats Wife To Death, Flees

Residents of Solar Power Drive, Igbo Olomu, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, are in shock after a landlord in the community, Omolaja Sodipo, allegedly stabbed his wife, Titilayo, killing her.

Sympathisers, friends and family members of the mother of four, trooped to their bungalow on Monday, where Titilayo laid in a pool of blood.

The husband was said to have fled the scene.

Community leaders reportedly alerted policemen from the Owutu division, who removed the corpse and deposited it in a mortuary.
